“I have a right to my opinion.” I’m sure you have heard these words before. You may have even spoken them. I can remember both hearing them and saying them and usually, this particular phrase surfaces when we find someone disagreeing with us. The statement is entirely true - You and I both have a right to our opinion. One may ask, “Does having a right necessarily make one right?”

In this wonderful “land of the free” we often times find great constitution in asserting ourselves into the lives of our fellow citizens -or what may at any time be called ‘present company’- simply because we have rights and because we feel entitled. For instance, we enjoy the right of free speech in this society. We can say what we want and when we want. It is interesting to note that while we may be free to speak, no one is obligated do listen or to hear us. I guess it could be argued that someone may be forced to hear me audibly and even then, this person is not forced to extend their inner ear to me. So what good then is having the right to speak when it can be neutralized by someone’s right to ignore you?

At the Life Exchange last weekend we discussed some differences between what it means to be entitled and what it means to be worthy. We are having some wonderful discussions each week learning how powerful our lives are when we remember how worthy we are. We are worthy of all that’s good. Worthy of all that is God. As we continue dialoguing about ‘entitlement’ & ‘worth’ this week, I would like for you to consider.

You do have a right to your opinion
You do have a right to speak

What may be more valuable to you is that fact that you are worthy to be heard, seen, and loved. Our world becomes more beautiful when we present our worth rather than only exercise our rights.
